Western Psych Shooter Sill Unknown, Second Deceased Victim Identified

In the wake of the shooting at Western Psychiatric Institute and Clinic in Pittsburgh Thursday, one of the two men killed has been identified.

According to the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, Edgewood resident Michael Schaab, 25, was pronounced dead at the scene around 3:00PM.

The gunman’s identity still remains unknown since he was not carrying any identification, but was described by the Medical Examiner’s office as a white male. He was also pronounced dead at Western Psych after being shot by a University of Pittsburgh police officer.

Six of the seven injured received gunshot wounds; five of the injured were Western Psychiatric employees. One was admitted to the ICU at UPMC Presbyterian, four admitted for surgery, and two treated and released from the hospital. Conditions of the hospitalized victims range from fair to serious.

The gunman entered Western Psych’s lobby around 1:40PM Thursday and opened fire. One witness said at least 30 shots were fired. Dozens of shell casings were found in the area, along with two semiautomatic handguns. It is believed the gunman acted alone.

Police continue to investigate the shooting today.
